BMW X3 Review, Specs and Features

2012 BMW X3 comes in two trims: xDrive28i and xDrive35i. There haven’t been many changes to the X3 for the 2012 model year, but some minor adjustments to both models include updated packages, including a new M sport package, standard high-gloss interior trim and standard floor mats. If you’re looking for a sporty luxury crossover, the 2012 BMW X3 is a good choice, but reviewers think its powertrain needs a few improvements.

Standard equipment on the xDrive28i includes 17-inch alloy wheels, leatherette upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, a USB adapter and BMW’s iDrive system.

The xDrive35i trim now has a standard panoramic sunroof, and the sports activity package includes 19-inch double-spoke wheels, Xenon adaptive headlights and genuine wood interior trim elements. The X3′s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system, Dynamic Stability Control with rollover sensor, and Hill Descent Control combine to offer excellent handling, traction and stability for a wide variety of terrain and weather conditions. Additional safety-related features include anti-lock disc brakes, front side-impact airbags, overhead airbags for both rows, active front head restraints, run-flat tires and a security system.

2012 BMW X3 suported by a turbocharged four-cylinder in the base model, and the turbocharged six expected in the top model. The X3 xDrive28i replaces a 240-horsepower naturally-aspirated six with a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces the same 240 horsepower, but gains 39 lb-ft of torque – to a peak of 260, from 1,250 all the way to 4,800 rpm. Fuel economy is up from 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway for the old engine to 21/28 mpg.

Meanwhile the xDrive35i gets a 300-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder, at 306 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque. The xDrive35i is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Both engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual shift mode.
